The nature of the internet has enabled us to be globally connected on so many levels. Not only is it easier to communicate, do business, learn and explore, the internet has also opened up access to so many more services. This ease of connection has particular benefits for those looking to participate in therapy or counselling. Through online services you’re able to access the right therapist for you, no matter where you may be located in the world.

Mobility and accessibility

For the able-bodied, it is difficult to sometimes comprehend the nature of true accessibility for those who are not. Online therapy sessions via webcam enable those who have difficulties with access to still engage in regular therapy. In my practice, this is especially important because to access my clinic you need to climb a few stairs! Offering online sessions removes the barrier to entry for not only those with physical disabilities but also reduced ability brought on by age or illness.

Online therapy also removes the barrier for those living in remote or regional locations. These locations may only have one option for therapy, or none at all. The ease of connectivity online (or even over the phone) means you are not limited to the reduced options within physical distance but have the pick of the country or even the globe.

Anxiety and other mental illness

Mental illness can be as large a barrier to access as physical illness. Online therapy provides clients with an opportunity to address these illnesses and work through challenges without creating more stress. Not only do online sessions mean you don’t have to find a new place, navigate transport and timing, be potentially seen visiting therapy or encounter other anxieties, it also means that you’re able to do the work in a place already comfortable to you.

This level of comfort can be an essential factor in your experience of therapy, as we can only change when we’re comfortable and willing to put in the work. Too much discomfort and anxiety about physical factors create another barrier for the mind and self.

Additional benefits

Sometimes we’re so overwhelmed with life that we struggle to make time for therapy. Even though we can appreciate our own need and the benefit in engaging in therapy or counselling, the thought of ‘squeezing it in’ is too much. Online therapy also caters to this, as a session from your living room requires no travel and has more options for flexible timing. Additionally, therapy online allows for more anonymity if you’re nervous about how your family, friends or colleagues will perceive you undertaking therapy.

Security and Privacy

A webcam session is just like having face-to-face counselling, except we talk online using a secure video link (similar to Skype or FaceTime). I use a service called Cliniko and I sometimes use Zoom. Cliniko is my preferred webcam platform because it’s available to users with lower bandwidths and it meets a very high standard of confidentiality, data security, and end-to-end encryption. The Cliniko telehealth platform is designed to meet the data protection regulations of Australian Privacy PrinciplesGDPR, and HIPAA.
